We aren’t just committed to our community — we’re owned by it!

A food co-op is a grocery store owned by your neighbors (and by you, if you choose). Unlike corporate chains, we’re totally independent and owned by the community members who shop here. 

Here’s how it works: Everyone is welcome to shop, eat and hang out here. And everyone is welcome to join the co-op by making a one-time investment, and then getting back financial rewards and a vote to choose the board of directors and impact the direction of the business. 

While each food co-op is unique and owned by the community, they’re also part of a network of neighborhood stores across the country that work together toward the day when everyone has the good, local, healthy food they deserve.

Happy Earth Day! ♻️💦🌳 Sustainability is relevant to everything we do at The Merc Co+op. From the products we source to the organizations we support to our composting program, concern for the environment and our community is always top of mind. Swipe to see how your co-op is working to make our planet a healthier place. 🌎 Our co-op completed Lawrence's largest solar energy project to date in 2018, providing 26% of our energy annually. 🌎 We discontinued the use of plastic bags at our registers in 2013, and our produce departments at both stores are swapping to plastic bags recycled from plastic recovered from oceans and streams this spring. 🌎 Partnering with @missouriorganic we composted 291,000+ in 2023. 🌎 All our deli and coffee containers and utensils are compostable or recyclable. 🌎 The Merc Co+op donated over 45,000 lbs of food to local pantries last year. 🌎 40,000 lbs of unsellable produce was donated as animal feed to local farmers. 🌎In KCK, permeable pavers in the parking lot allow rainwater to seep back into the soil. 🌎 Cisterns collect rainwater from the KCK location's rooftop to water the native plant garden installed by our friends at @palkck and @cultivatekc 🌎 We installed a native plant garden at our Lawrence location in 2020 with @nativelandsks and @maggiesfarm.ks Demonstrating hospitality, generosity, and care for the environment is built into our Ends, and there's always more work to do!
