International Cooperative Principles
In 1844, the Rochdale Equitable Society of Pioneers instituted the guidelines by which all cooperatives put their values into practice. The International Cooperative Alliance most recently reviewed these guidelines in 1995, after previous reviews in 1966 and 1937.
They are the International Cooperative Principles:
P1 - Voluntary and Open Membership
P2 - Democratic Member Control
P3 - Member Economic Participation
P4 - Autonomy and Independence
P5 - Education, Training, and Information
P6 - Cooperation among Cooperatives
P7 - Concern for Community
Co-op Values: Cooperatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, cooperative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.

Ends Policies
In contrast to the International Cooperative Principles, which all cooperatives follow, The Merc Ends Policies are unique to our store. The Board of Directors writes Ends Policies to describe the results that our co-op works to achieve. These eight statements articulate our Co-op's purpose and help us create measurable goals, bringing us closer to realizing our Ends.
The Merc Ends Policies:
Because of the Merc Co-op there will be a reliable source of Healthy Local and Organic foods and products at reasonable costs.
1. There will be social and economic networks that encourage community and a sense of connection to others.
2. There will be an organization that exemplifies environmental, economic, and social sustainability.
3. There will be a just and sustainable local food system in our region.
4. Our community will be better educated about issues related to food and health.
5. There will be a thriving cooperative grocery store that is responsive and beneficial to its Owners.
6. There will be a source of employment in the community that provides personal satisfaction, career opportunities, livable wages and benefits to employees.
7. Our community will understand the value of cooperative enterprises and principles and have a vibrant cooperative sector in the economy
